To be followed Rules
All players are responsible for knowing and abiding by the Tournament RULES.
Note: Any changes in the following tournament rules and structure will be forwarded to the Team Captains and they will be responsible for updating each player.
Tournament Structure/Format:
- All games are based on typical ice hockey rules indicating five on five play with goalies.
- Cost: Cost per player is $90.00 including goalies; each player will get 4 games which includes 2 Referees, Timekeeper, Scorekeeper, jersey/socks usage, a beverage or two after each game.
- Participating Teams: The Summit Series includes 8 teams divided up into 2 'Groups' (in 1 division) in this tournament. Each team will play 3 group games and based on your pool standing the team will be placed in the Sunday finals for one game (see #5 below).
- Tournament Management Team: There will exist a group of Tournament Organizers and a group of Team Captains (1 Captain for each team).
- Number of Games: Each team is guaranteed four (4) games: three (3) Preliminary games (in a 'round robin' format, in their Group) + one (1) Final game (teams 'cross over' to meet their respective 'Nth place finish' team, from the other Group).
- Game Duration: Each game will be played in a 1 hour & 15 minute (75 minutes) time slot.
To maximize the ice time, each game will consist of:
- 4-minute warm-up
- 35-minute '1st' period ('running time')
- 1-minute break (teams will not 'switch ends' between the two periods)
- 35-minute '2nd' period ('running time')
The last two (2) minutes of the '2nd' period will be played as 'stop time.' If necessary, at the first stoppage of play, in the last five (5) minutes of the arena scheduled 'ice time remaining,' the score clock will be reset to two (2) minutes. This will ensure that the ice time is maximized and that each game is completed in the arena time slot scheduled.
- Preliminary games: Two 'points' will be awarded for a win, one 'point' for a tie game, and zero 'points' for a loss. There will be no 'sudden-death' formats used, in the event of a tie game, in the Preliminary games.
- Tournament Tie Breaking Procedures
In the event of a tie in the 'points' standings, after the Preliminary games have been played, the tie will be broken in the following sequence:- least penalty minutes ('team' minutes total).
- head-to-head win.
- highest goal differential (goals FOR less goals AGAINST).
- earliest tournament game/time of first goal scored.
- After the Preliminary games, teams ranked 1st in their respective Groups will play each other in the '1st' Final. Teams ranked 2nd in their respective Groups will play each other in the '2nd' Final. Teams ranked 3rd in their respective Groups will play each other in the '3rd' Final. Teams ranked 4th in their respective Groups will play each other in the '4th' Final.
- Final games: In the event of a tie, at the end of regulation time, in any Final game, a 'shootout' format will be used - each team selects 3 shooters. If the game is still tied, after the first 3 shooters, a 'sudden death shootout' format will be used. One NEW shooter per team shoots until a winner is declared. All players must take a turn shooting before any player can shoot again.
- Referees: There will be 2 carded, independent Referees per game. All Referees' decisions, during the course of the games, are final.
- Game sheets: Game sheets must be prepared and presented to the Scorekeeper before each game. The single copy of the game sheet will be handed over to the Tournament Organizers, after each game.
- Unsportsmanlike conduct: The Tournament Organizers have the right to revoke the right of any team (including players, coaches, managers, trainers, fans, or other team officials) from further competition in the tournament should the Tournament Organizers feel any of the above-mentioned teams/persons have acted in an unsportsmanlike manner, whether on or off the ice. No financial reimbursement will be given to any team/person disqualified from tournament participation.
- Questions/disputes: Any questions/disputes which may arise should be brought forward to the Tournament Organizers, who will have the final say in resolving the matter. The Tournament Organizers reserve the right to 'juggle' teams, as necessary, to keep teams as 'even' as possible.
Tournament Rules:
This tournament is for the enjoyment of all players. Unless otherwise specified below, playing rules and regulations will be those used by the Alberta Oldtimers Hockey Association.
- Uniform: Each player will be issued a 'country' team jersey and matching socks, which are to be returned, to the Tournament Organizers, after the completion of the tournament. As a team member, each player is expected to wear the jersey and matching socks, in pride of the country they are playing for (there are no socks, for goalies). If any player is not willing to wear their team's jersey or socks, the player will not be allowed to participate in the tournament. Once a jersey number has been chosen by / assigned to a participant, that will be the participant's number for the entire tournament. Switching jersey numbers is not allowed, due to tracking of statistics (goals, assists, penalty minutes, etc.).
- Team Roster / Liability Waiver / Media* Release: Each team ('country') will have a Team Roster / Liability Waiver / Media* Release form. Each player is expected to sign the Team Roster / Liability Waiver / Media* Release form, of the team ('country') they are playing for. This form holds harmless the Tournament Organizers, from any legal action. Also, as the Tournament Organizers may decide to 'record' any or all parts of the tournament (on or off the ice, before or after any game, in any area of the arena or surrounding areas), with audio and or video equipment, the form releases the rights, of any 'recorded' media material, to the Tournament Organizers. If any player is not willing to sign the Team Roster / Liability Waiver / Media* Release form, of the team ('country') they are playing for, the player will not be allowed to participate in the tournament. Media* – can be any format: film, DVD, CD, digital, analog, video, audio, etc.
- Penalties
- Minor penalty: 3 minutes running time. Adds to 'team' penalty minutes.
- Major penalty: 7 minutes running time. Adds to 'team' penalty minutes.
- Misconduct: 14 minutes running time. Does not add to 'team' penalty minutes. Player is not ejected from the tournament unless some other 'Major' penalty was awarded to the player.
- Ejection from game: No penalty minutes to serve unless otherwise specified by the Referees. Does not add to 'team' penalty minutes. Player is not ejected from the tournament unless some other 'Major' penalty was awarded to the player.
- Penalties are served by a player who was on the ice at the time of the infraction. In the event of a penalty that spans the transition from 'running time' to 'stop time' (at the end of the game), no matter what the 'game time remaining' (on the score clock) is reset to, the posted penalty minutes will be let to expire, as originally posted. No re-setting of the penalty clock times will be done. After a penalty has been assessed, the ensuing face-off will be in the offending team's zone.
- Fighting is strictly prohibited and will result in immediate ejection from the tournament.
- Major penalties (except for 'high sticking' deemed accidental by the Referees) will result in immediate ejection from the tournament.
- Any 3 penalties in one game (by any one player) will result in the ejection, of that player, for the remainder of that game and the next game.
- Any 5 penalties in the tournament (by any one player) will result in the immediate ejection, of that player, from the tournament.
In all cases of ejection from the tournament, no financial reimbursement will be given to the ejected player(s). Team Captains are responsible for notifying ejected players of their ejection from the games / tournament.
- Ejected Players / Forfeited Games: If any player, who has been ejected from playing subsequent games (for any reason - see above), attempts to play in any subsequent game, that game will be considered a 'forfeit' and the opposing team (to the ejected player) will be awarded a 1-0 win. That ejected player will immediately be banned from playing in the current and any future CTAOT tournaments. 'Forfeited' games will not be played. Team Captains (from both teams) will not participate in 'forfeits.' Referees will not officiate 'forfeits.' Timekeepers and Scorekeepers will not participate in 'forfeits.'
- Body Contact: There will be 'incidental' contact only - no 'body checking' allowed.
- Slap Shots: There will be no 'slap shots' ('faked' or 'actual') allowed. Any 'slap shot' motion (stick above the ankle) will result in a stoppage of play only - no penalty will be assessed (with one exception - see 'Slap Shot Exception' below). If the 'slap shot' ('faked' or 'actual') has been done by a player in his team's own zone, the ensuing face-off will be in that team's zone. If the 'slap shot' ('faked' or 'actual') has been done by a player in the opposing team's zone, the ensuing face-off will be moved out of that zone, into the neutral ice zone. Slap Shot Exception: If any 'slap shot' ('faked' or 'actual') has been done by a player on a team currently in a 'penalty kill' situation, that player will be assessed a 'Delay of Game' minor penalty.
- Knocking the puck down with a high stick: Knocking the puck down with a high stick will not be considered a 'high sticking' penalty. It will result in a stoppage of play only - no penalty will be assessed. If the puck has been knocked down by a player in his team's own zone, the ensuing face-off will be in that team's zone. If the puck has been knocked down by a player in the opposing team's zone, the ensuing face-off will be moved out of that zone, into the neutral ice zone.
- Center Line: All games will be played with no 'red' (center) line.
- Icing: 'Automatic' icing will be utilized. Due to no 'red' (center) line in effect (see above), icing will only be considered when the puck has been shot from inside the 'blue' line of one end of the ice surface, across the 'goal' line, at the other end of the ice surface.
- Quick Face-offs: Quick face-offs will be utilized. Fast line changes are suggested as the Referees will re-start play as quickly as necessary, to keep the game moving along properly.
- Late start: All games will commence on schedule regardless of whether the teams are ready or not. Any team unable to commence play 10 minutes after the scheduled starting time will forfeit the game and the opposing team will be awarded a 1-0 win.
- Goalie injured and cannot continue: When the Referees make the determination that a goalie (due to injury) cannot continue play, the injured goalie's team will be allowed a 5-minute game delay, to dress an alternate goalie (any goalie or player registered in the tournament). At the end of the 5 minutes, play will continue with or without a goalie in place (6 skaters will be allowed until the goalie is replaced). If the injured goalie cannot continue in the tournament (subsequent games), please let the Tournament Organizers know. The Tournament Organizers have a list of 'pre-approved' similar rated ‘spare’ goalies.
- Leaving the ice: Any team leaving the ice before completion of their game will automatically be disqualified from further competition in the tournament, without financial reimbursement. The opposing team(s) will be awarded a 1-0 win, for each game forfeited.
Please note: These jerseys/socks are for the exclusive use, of CTAOT tournament players, at the CTAOT tournament games. The jerseys/socks will not be lent out to any other groups/individuals, at any time. The jerseys/socks will not be rented out to any other groups/individuals, at any time. Please do not ask to borrow/rent the jerseys/socks. Thank you.
